Seven vessels

Art by Lucy Pierce

I.
in the light of the miracle
phosphorescent dolphins diving beside the ship;
our bodies are glowing in full congruence
the north star bears witness and guides our way.
i wake, full of dreams at the foot of thresholds
crossing them, we are eager and full of awe.
i hold on, your body my anchor, dark river in flow to the eternal.

II.
prophecies drop from the sky, red rain realised
carved rivulets into pillars, black and white, rooted in sand
i taste spring on your skin, your hand sifting through riverbed
a willing fool, grasping the light to offer the sun.
the heart of night blesses our lovemaking, when sought meets its finding
ecstasy welcomes its guests, and binds their hands with ribbon.
i bring my prayer to your stonehouse, Mother watching with anticipation.

III.
the mind’s eye holds the song of what is to come, key to the miraculous.
a seal upon the heart and a chasm where two vipers meet.
i learn the way of clay, earth vessels to contain water of life, grief, joy
green sun-drenched waters descend from iron-cleft crown;
my body adjusts to a new rhythm of giving myself fully, i am your shadow.
and so now am I devoted to the light that joins you to me
my palms shape unspoken promises into your backbone; i am the shell to your sea.

IV.
gold dusks dissolve within us, home smells of lime leaves and chamomile
an open letter, my love beside me and all around
and to the south, green moss forests crack open and wait for us
as the bliss of return and reunion unravels our descent.
you show me the beauty of the ascent, then safe landing on edges of orange rock
lantern-lit, weary, rooted in unknown contentment,
your upward flow, my downward sigh, i am your mirror, you are mine.

V.
on the fifth day, i swallow the sun and become filled with light.
gently mocking, sweet suggestion, animals playing
slow mornings, our sleep melts into wakefulness; he kisses honey off my lips
holy gifts, gained in the giving.
it’s a dance of reciprocation, black and white angels welcomed in equal measure
the five out of the four, the reddening envelops the sea.
we go through the red door of the heart, for ever faithful to the song that sings us.

VI.
time is compressed, seven years into one, squeezed like a womb and contracting.
Kairos oversees the ripening now and the soil bursts with new life
two dark green Moldavite rocks calling each other, breadcrumbs left to find our way back, here.
two worlds gathered again impossibly in the orbit of the One
mountains wait for the soles of our feet to gather the earth’s blessings for us
and life waters wait to offer peat-scented pearls and pine resins to the fruits of our longing.
so here, in our house by the well, we tend to the dream building a love whose roots deepen in daily regularity.

VII.
Hudson river diamond, holdfast, sunken, captured.
seven rivers into seven seas to bring us right here, glowing and wordless.
bottle green waters engulfed in flame, stars shake as we draw close to each other
and god tells us the light has come and, for once, we believe it.
unacknowledged spies in a foreign land, drunk on the rapture of their communion
we purify our past through story, as we begin to grow and flourish from the compost of our sheddings
two vines intertwined, bearing seven flames, heaven rooted in earth.
